South African Architecture - Port Elizabeth

We tend to think we need to leave South Africa to find beatiful buildings and architecture, such as the Eiffel Tower or even the leaning tower of Pisa. Have you ever stepped out your backdoor and seen the true beauty South Africa holds?

Port Elizabeth is my home town and only recently have i explored the city.I have found it very enriching and fulfilling learning about the history of my home town. In this blog I will single out Port Elizabeth. City known for it's big harbour and warm Ocean, but do people even know of our lovely buildings?

Elizabeth Donkin, Port Elizabeth was named after this lady even though she has never visited the city. A pyramid built in honour of the love of  Sir Rufane Donkin's life. He later commited suicide. They say he never got over the death of his late wife.

Our beautiful public library completed in 1835

Bell Tower completed in 1923 to commemorate the arrival of the 1820 settlers.

Port Elizabeth City Hall, completed in 1858

Statue of Queen Victoria, erected in 1903.

These are only a few mentioned. Do yourself a favour, those lazy Sundays at home spent infront of the TV, change it into an adventure to discover Port Elizabeth's hidden beauties. It's like finding treasure.
